The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie Oct. 5

The Nevada Conservatory Theatre at UNLV will present the first production of the Second Season, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, in the Black Box Theatre at UNLV beginning October 5.

Jay Presson Allen wrote the play that is based on Muriel Spark’s 1961 novel. Miss Brodie is a charming, eccentric schoolteacher at a private Edinburgh school in the 1930s. Her unorthodox teaching methods ignore the school’s curriculum, and idealize art, passion and daring. There is partial nudity in this production and it is recommended for mature adults.

The novel first appeared in the New Yorker before being published in 1961. Allen wrote the play in 1969. Vanessa Redgrave portrayed Miss Brodie in the play; and Maggie Smith in the film, for which she won an Academy Award. It was later made into a television series.

Mandy Peters directs the production, which features Charlene Sher in the role of Miss Jean Brodie. The students, or the “Brodie Set,” include Danielle DeStefano as Sandy, Rebecca Reyes as Monica, Amanda Kraft as Jenny, and Bridget Prieto as Mary. Others in the cast are Elisabeth Bokhoven, Brooks Asher, Michael Tylo, Gloria Hoffman, Kim Kelly, Mary Catania, Brittany Gray, Kayla Ibarra, Rachel Lanyi, Phoenix Toliver and Melanie Turner, and Sean Moulson.

Scene design is by guest artist Thom Bumblauskas, with costume design by Katrina Hertfelder and lighting by Jamie Lofthouse.

After the performance on Thursday, October 11, there will be a discussion about the play with the actors and members of the production staff.

Performances are in the Black Box Theatre October 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, and 13 at 8 p.m. with matinees at 2 p.m. October 6, 7, 13 and 14.
